RELIEVE ACNE – GET A CLEAR COMPLEXION
You may have heard of Proactiv. Well Drs. Katie Rodan and Kathy Fields created it. Now as the founders of Rodan + Fields Dermatologists, they have created a full line of multi-medication treatments for troubled skin. UMBLEMISH REGIMEN is the new way to tackle tough acne breakouts and control them. The problems of acne can come at any age. It is not just teens that suffer the self-consciousness of unsightly bumps and redness. Drs. Rodan and Fields wrote the book Write Your Skin A Prescription For Change, a national best seller on skin conditions and care. The introductory quote from the chapter on acne by Dr. Kathy Fields captures the urgency of a facial breakout:
“The only good thing I can say about adult acne and rosacea is that if your face is red and bumpy, nobody will notice your wrinkles. When it comes to common skin concerns, breakouts trump everything.” Dr. Kathy Fields
Many of us remember battling the pimples of our teenage years when we see it on our children or grandchildren. We recently started our grandson on the Unblemish Regimen after a noticeable outbreak on his face. In just a couple of weeks, there was remarkable improvement. Adults also commonly find themselves struggling with complexion disturbances from the intrusion of acne. ”In fact the American Academy of Dermatology reports that nearly 85% of people experience acne at some point in their lives.”1 It is the most frequently diagnosed condition by dermatologist. If you or your teen are having acne issues, you are not alone. This is why Drs. Rodan and Fields have made it their mission to develop and improve acne treatments. You deserve to be freed from the physical, emotional and psychological challenges associated with this prevalent skin condition.
Parents – How does acne make your teen feel?
The emotional impact of acne should be considered one of the most important issues victimizing the acne sufferer. Teenagers are in their formative years with increasing emphasis on development of social skills and self-esteem. The unwelcome case of an acne breakout, even if mild, can harm your teenager’s feelings of self-worth. There are accounts of teens stating that their acne has kept them from going to parties or talking in class to
avoid attention to their face. Children who don’t like to look at their face in the mirror cannot be expected to perform at their best in the classroom or their social circles. This can be devastating. Several studies have indicated the psychological damage is real and significant with reported social withdrawal, low self-esteem and depression persistent among acne victims. Sometimes this emotional upheaval during these socially formative years can last a life time. Dr. Rodan has shared that one patient confided, that she“felt she never lived up to her potential as an adult because of the acne she had as a teen.”2
Where does acne come from?
Let’s just highlight how acne develops. Your skin is constantly sloughing off old skin cells and replacing them with new ones. During this process skin cells can block the pores. This blockage can be thought of like a “cork in the bottle” so-to-speak, that blocks the opening of your skin pores. The skin pores are natural openings which under normal conditions supply a doorway for natural oils to surface to the outer layer of your skin. If the dead skin cells block or clog this doorway the oil becomes trapped. This provides an ideal environment for anaerobic (oxygen hating) bacteria to find a home. This is where is starts to get ugly. The bacteria called Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) loves to breed and feed on the pools of oil. When bacteria finds such a playground, it sets off some inflammatory toxins and the redness is on. The body sounds the alarm and sends an army of red and white blood cells to fight the growing infection. You know the rest of the story, intense swelling, redness, pimples forming, pustules and even a cyst or nodule in the more severe cases.3
What is hyperpigmentation?
The aftermath of acne can be just as much a trauma on one’s appearance due to pink/brown discoloration known as post-inflamatory hyperpigmentation at the site of healed blemishes. The darker your skin color the more likely you are to experience these marks. This is often confused with actual scaring but this phenomenon is not scaring. These marks can take a very long time to go away. They can seem permanent. Treatment is available in the formulation of the Unblemish Regimen to relieve the skin of the unsightly post acne healing. The best first step to avoid this issue is appropriate use of the multi-medication regimen to minimize the threat of breakouts in the first place. 4
